Day 8: Galway Girl

Monday 22/7/19

Today we travelled by coach to Galway for the next leg of our tour, oops i mean trip.

Our guide, Aine told us many stories including the one about St Brigid, the most important Irish saint.
(and no, St Patrick was apparently Welsh and was not such a hero anyway.) Go girl.
She started monasteries which were schools and both girls and boys were able to attend. She also made these wooden crosses and they are handmade now and are a special gift for safety and good luck.

We stopped at Moate for coffee (read comfort stop) but it was a quaint little town.

More friends for Paul

And then on to Galway for a chance to look around and have some lunch.  It is a very busy vibrant city full of tourists. And there was an Arts festival in town so even busier.

We had instructions to find a chair with a statue of Oscar Wilde and  someone else. We did not find it nor some other famous castle where a town mayor called Lynch had to execute his own son by hanging. Hence the term lynching.  That is what Aine said anyway.

We did find St Nicholas' church where Christopher Columbus prayed before starting going overseas.

In the evening we went to the local castle for dinner and a show. IT was Castle Dunguarie and was gorgeous.

The show was singing and poetry readings from Yeats and Shaw with a harpist

The harp music was incredible.
