Friday 19/7/19
Today we left Crawley and England via Gatwick Airport to fly to Ireland.
We hadn't realised that today was the start of the school holidays so the airport was crowded with families and screaming children, long lines and nowhere to sit.
It began almost as soon as we arrived . We joined a line and saw that people were walking single file being watched by soldiers carrying machine guns. Generally not a good thing. A touch threatening. Paul asked a nice fully armed policeman as we went past and were informed they were testing the sniffer dog. Great.
Once in we even had to line up for breakfast with thousands of other people and it was a military operation allocating tables as soon as one was vacated.
The major security stuff continued as we went through Customs. I was strip searched.
Yes really. I count being asked to remove my shoes and being physically touched and prodded with something as being strip searched. This was after the full body scan for the second time. Apparently random. Maybe it is me and my swarthy appearance/curly hair/intense trying to focus gaze.
Finally in our nice hotel near the middle of Dublin. We had the best Taxi driver who talked non-stop in the best Irish accent. The best thing about Ireland is the accent, certainly not the weather.
We walked through St Stephen's Green, a beautiful green park. Lots of parks in Dublin and everything is green.
We were advised to go through the Green to get to the city centre and the pubs. Pubs and something called Guinness is big here.
My first Guinness. Half a pint. A pint is huge. Paul had one. So far this is the best one as we had one later at night which was no way as good
There are buskers everywhere and this was one. It was unbelievably busy in this main street and bright and lively. Very Irish and pretty incredible.
